GREAT FALLS - Montana State University’s College of Technology in Great Falls is offering a new program in welding to help satisfy demand for skilled workers.

Well-qualified welders are in great demand — and that demand is growing as the welding work force ages, said several experts in the field.

German officials confirmed Monday that welding work was the cause of the recent fire at the Berlin Philharmonic’s landmark concert hall, The Associated Press reported.

Weylin James Chaffie, 21, of Ithaca, has graduated from the Northlands Job Corp Program in Vergennes, Vt. He has accepted a welding technician position in Claremont, N.H.

“Made with a will, made with hope, made with love, made with work” is how Samuel Colton, an Arizona Western College welding professor, describes the “Iron Pillar,” a sculpture made by his welding students.
