CARLSBAD — There's a new sheriff in town. Long-time law enforcement officer Ernie Mendoza will be sworn in today as Eddy County Sheriff. He will immediately take over the reins from Sheriff Kent Waller, who has completed two four-year terms as sheriff and could not run again due to term limits.
